The domain name £.com is to be auctioned today for an estimated $2 million.
The website £.com, also known as PoundSymbol.com, was bought for $40 nine years ago by Nottingham businessman Richard Haigh.
"I bought it before the internet really took off and while prices for domain names were low. Whatever happens at the auction, its sale will change my life for ever," said Mr Haigh.
He described £.com as "really very special" as it is only one of two single-symbol generic domain names in the world .com is the other.
The website is predicted to be used for a social networking site debating the introduction of the euro to the UK, but it may have many other applications.
Bidding will take place at the Grand Hotel Krasnapolsky, Amsterdam at the Ocean Tomo 2008 European Live IP Auction this afternoon (Thursday June 26th).
It will be Ocean Tomo's second auction in Europe. At their first, held in London last year, on-the-floor sales amounted to over $8.1 million.
