Fabric.com has been bought by the online shop Amazon.com, it was reported this week.
The fabric and haberdashery website was bought for an undisclosed sum. It is expected to continue as a stand-alone operation, according to Information Week.
Fabric.com, based in Georgia, USA, specialises in home decor, fashion and quilting fabric, sewing tools and patterns. It also has a forum with over 1,400 members and a blog featuring sewing instructions, recipes and tips on the hobby.
Amazon.com sees the acquisition as a benefit to both sites, as Fabric.com can offer a greater range haberdashery while Amazon.com can address a growing demand in the market.
Chris Nielsen, vice president of the Amazon.com Home & Garden store, said: "Fabric.com has built an impressive business by providing great products and excellent service for sewing and crafting enthusiasts."
"Over the years, we've seen a growing interest in this segment from our customers," he added.
Fabric.com was launched in 1999 by Stephen Friedman. Amazon.com began as an online bookshop in 1995 and has since expanded its range and its grip on the market.
