A US company has ended years of waiting by finally landing the domain name Auction.com.
REDC paid out $1.7 million to acquire the address, making it the second-biggest seller in domain trading this year behind only Toys.com, according to Domain Name News.
Company chairman Robert Friedman revealed that he had been chasing the domain name for some time and was thrilled to have won the bidding for the "coveted top-level domain".
"REDC is without question the number one real estate auctioneer in America and quite likely the world. This is a domain we should have had from the beginning and I'm thrilled we are finally Auction.com," he commented.
Mr Friedman added that REDC's strong marketing campaigns would serve to maximise the benefit of the domain name and could potentially make it the main portal for real estate auction in the US.
While the $1.7 million fee might be out of the price range of many businesses, similar generic domain names are available at more realistic costs and could help improve their presence online.
Companies might consider a bid for VanAuctions.com, which starts from £15,000, or Bidded.com, which is available from £2,900.
