1st September 2008 Catchiness 'key to GDN success'

Catchiness is one of the key elements of the success of a generic domain name, particularly when coupled with brandability and language penetration, one expert has claimed.
Barry Goggin wrote on DomainInformer that catchiness relates to how memorable the domain name is - which becomes even more powerful if the name is also brandable.
He uses the contrast between the generic domain name Monster.com and the brand name Google.com. Both, he argues, are instantly quickly memorable and equally brandable.
However, because the term 'Monster' is already recognisable to the population, there was far less work to be done to make it a household name.
On a similar note, Mr Goggins argues that language penetration is also a factor in the success of a web address. Names that are not currently in wide usage face an uphill struggle for recognition, particularly compared to generic domain names.
Among the biggest generic domain name sales recently have been Printer.com and Affiliate.com, according to DN Journal.
