30th August 2007 Consumers want 'no nonsense' generic domain names

Business owners who have not yet purchased a domain name are being advised to pick something generic rather than a 'nonsense' name that few will remember.
Names which include numbers or are spelled strangely are often quickly forgotten by web browsers and consumers who usually have a 'no nonsense' approach to the web.
The proof of the success which using a generic domain name can bring is clear when looking at some of the most successful websites such as apple.com, ask.com and think.com.
This recommendation was recently backed up by the LA Times which published a report on the huge numbers of "dotty dot coms" which are flooding the internet.
Choosing a strange name such as Xobni, Meebo or Squidoo, for example, doesn't give customers any idea about what product it sells or what service the business offers.
According to the LA Times, companies with non-generic names are "in danger of overwhelming customers".
The report claimed: "Not many will bother to commit it to memory that Imeem is a social network for sharing music and videos or that Imbee is a social network for kids."
Steve Manning, managing director of Igor, a naming company in San Francisco, told the newspaper: "You cannot possibly remember one from another."
