29th October 2007 Cowboys.com $370k sale after football fall-through
Domain name news brought to you by DescriptiveDomainNames.com
Generic domain name Cowboys.com has sold for a huge $370,000 price tag, but not before a high profile bidder was snagged in the lasso of domain name sales. The appeal of the site's generic name was particularly apparent to phone-in bidders from NFL side the Dallas Cowboys, who made a bid for 275, but assuming it was dollars and not thousands of dollars they were talking in. The bid debacle ended in withdrawal of the NFL team's bid, but even if the side had rated the address at $275,000, it may not have been enough with buyers at the subsequent silent auction coughing up $375,000. A top generic domain name is often rated as extremely important to the basis of an e-business, with the eventual buyers at Moniker's silent auction, a group of investor's led by Eric Rice, declaring its sector-specific importance to them. Mr Rice said: "We have been studying the thriving country and western market for over 6 months and are glad to finally have the domain needed to proceed in the category." Dallas Cowboys may be left smarting at the loss of the domain name and committed to doing their research in order to make their next foray into web name sales a less embarrassing one.
