Residents in East Palo Alto can now access crime reports in their area due to a utility available through a generic domain name.
By logging onto CrimeReports.com, residents in East Palo Alto in California can check crime statistics and see if any incidents have occurred in their area.
An alerting and mapping service has been designed by Utah firm Public Engines and working with the site, the utility aims to keep people in the loop about criminal activity near to their homes.
"The first objective is to just get data into the hands of the people who live there," stated Greg Whisenant, chief executive officer and president of Public Engines.
Mr Whisenant said that this is because residents will be encouraged to "make decisions based on what [they] know".
Last year, the generic domain name received the backing of the US government, as authorities in Utah announced that the state would use the utility to inform residents of crime statistics.
