25th July 2007 Direct navigation really pays for generic domain ads

Consumers do not all automatically use a search engine in order to find a product or service, and this reality is why buying a generic domain name can be lucrative to businesses.
Many consumers actually bypass search engines in favour of direct navigation so now a new market is opening up whereby keen entrepreneurs buy up generic domain names in order to use them as search portals on specific services or products. For example by buying LacrosseSticks.com, the entrepreneur could then charge lacrosse stick manufacturers for advert space on the site.
These sorts of sites are attractive to consumers because they are less "clogged up" with manipulated listings that often appear on search engine results pages, according to the E-Commerce Times.
The online news source says: "It is estimated by several organisations that traffic to parked pages drives about ten per cent of the pay-per-click ad market.
"Even more interestingly, WebSideStory found that direct navigation had a 4.23 per cent conversion-to-sale rate, while search engine clicks on average lead to a 2.3 per cent conversion-to-sales rate."
Make sure the domain ends in .com to really reap the new custom, according to the source.
