It seems that the centre of the generic domain name ownership capital is British Colombia where its collective domain owners are worth $1 billion (£500 million), according to a report by the Vancouver Sun.
Some of the world's most valuable addresses, including God.com, belong to owners living here with one inhabitant owning over 100,000 generic domain names.
Poker.com was sold from here for a massive $20 million (£10 million) while Virus.com is yet to be sold, but will surely be extremely lucrative given its use by pharmaceutical companies and software worlds.
"At the heart of a domainer's profitability is the potency of generic, non-trademarked names. Take, for example, Attorney.com or Laptop.com - both owned by Dr Ham's company Reinvent Technology," says the Vancouver Sun.
"An internet user looking for one of those services might skip typing the term into a search engine and instead browse directly to one of Dr Ham's Web sites, which are bristling with ads. Every time a user clicks on one of those ads, Dr Ham is paid."
This sort of direct navigation now accounts for ten per cent of all internet advertising.
