New measures introduced by Icann have brought about a fall in domain name tasting, it has been reported.
Since the introduction of a 20 cent fee for domain tasting in June, the number of those using the service has fallen by 84 per cent, according to Icann's latest registry report.
Domain name tasting is the phrase coined to describe those who register a domain name then delete it within five days if it does not attract enough traffic.
The introduction of the fee was a measure by Icann designed to prevent this, along with domain name kiting, which occurs when a user continually deletes their registration to avoid paying the fee.
According to Icann's latest figures, 17.6 million domain names were deleted within five days in June 2008 compared to just 2.8 million in July.
Owning a generic domain name has been likened to owning "prime real estate" recently by industry website DN Journal.
