Generic domain names are set to be strengthened over the coming years, claims a leading expert.
Xavier Buck, co-founder and chief executive of EuroDNS, believes that the recent decision of ICANN to reduce the rules facing top-level domains (TLDs) will lead to increased use and demand for generic names, reports DomainInformer.com.
"The so-called "new TLDs" are an opportunity to comfort the customers understanding of existing domain names while strengthening the power of generic names," explained Mr Buck.
He also added that there are ongoing changes in the domain industry with an increased focus on the "secondary market" as the market continues to mature leading to "a number of different actors and areas of activities, from investors, domainers to news portals and auction platforms".
New rules covering the creation of TLDs were introduced in June and allow the registration of any three letters as a TLD.
