An internet millionaire who was recently named in Forbes' 40 Wealthiest Americans Under Age 40 has highlighted the importance of generic domain names.
In an interview with domain industry news website DN Journal, Leland Hardy says that his acquisition of NewYork.com has led to him becoming the owner of "arguably, and certainly potentially, the single most valuable domain in cyberspace".
Mr Hardy, who has previously enjoyed a career as a professional boxer, sports agent and Wall Street trader, states that obtaining the right domain name is vital for business looking to fully exploit the opportunities presented by a website.
He suggests that by studying the benefits of search engines his company was able to build a site which offered "maximal exploitation of the business model
all at one domain that happens to be the easiest name in the world to remember."
He adds that a solid web address such as a site with a generic domain name that is followed by a .com is a more favourable acquisition than other top-level domains such as .net and .info.
Among the other generic sites whicjh have formed a part of Mr Hardy's portfolio is GolfSchools.com and RapVideos.com which was sold this year for $70,000.
