Geo-generic domain name hits record books

Domain name news brought to you by DescriptiveDomainNames.com

The world record for the longest domain name has been set by a geo-generic domain name, according to the World Records Academy this week.

Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch.com, the geo-domain for a small village in Wales, is officially the longest domain name at 58 letters.

Translated as St Mary's church in the hollow of the white hazel near a rapid whirlpool and the Church of St Tysilio of the red cave, the village has already achieved fame with its lengthy name and now hopes to attract visitors to its website.

While tourists may prize photographs of the railway station's sign, to locals it is known as Llanfair PG.

According to the World Records Academy, .com domain names with more than 26 characters - including the TLD – have been allowed since October 1999. Prior to this many companies were unable to use their names as domains.

In related news, a campaign has been launched to introduce a new ccTLD for Wales – .cym ("Cymru" meaning "Wales" in Welsh).
