Local media companies should invest in geodomains geographic generic domain names to achieve success on the internet, an expert has said.
Editor of domain industry news website DN Journal Ron Jackson commented on the trend for consumers getting news online, leaving tangible newspapers to decline.
Mr Jackson quoted Editor & Publisher Magazine which said "only a minority of editors think online journalism will save their papers". Entire sections are rapidly being lost, the magazine said.
According to Mr Jackson, geographic generic domain names "offer instant recognition and can deliver any kind of media - print, audio or video - from a single platform".
DN Journal also discussed the new Sporting News Today, an email version of the veteran Sporting News, launched this week.
The value of generic domain names based on locations was highlighted at the 2008 GeoDomain Expo, held in Chicago recently. A live auction, hosted by Moniker, accrued $279,000 from 40 lots.
