Makeup giant L'Oreal has bought the descriptive domain name and web site MakeUp.com.
The sale reported recently by Domain Name Wire said that Drew Sharma, a losing bidder, "bid into low seven figures", suggesting the L'Oreal paid over one million dollars for the name which was transfered to them last month.
The global market for cosmetics is estimated to be around $19 billion a year, so L'Oreal is in a good position to profit from its new acquistion, making the purchase price seem very low in comparison.
The category defining domain name had previously been owned by Manhattan Assets Corp who have also owned Call.com, Exercise.com and Automobile.com. Call.com was acquired by Live Current Media in 2006 and consequently sold for $1.1 million in 2009.
Descriptive, category defining .com names will probably keep growing in value as the names get acquired by the leaders in their industries. It looks increasingly unlikely that this name will ever come back onto the market, making L'Oreal's competitors the biggest losers.
