Microsoft's filtering technology could be blocking all references to sites with a .info top level domain (TLD).
According to web security expert Larry Seltzer the software giant has clamped down on URLs using .info.
Users of Microsoft's Messenger application have reported that sentences containing .info have failed to get through.
Mr Seltzer believes that this could be the result of a blanket ban designed to improve security.
"As a top-level domain it [.info] is largely a failure," he wrote in his blog on the PC Magazine website.
"There is a perception that it is a haven for malware distributors, but I haven't seen any actual data on that."
The .info TLD is used by a number of legitimate websites, including New York's Metropolitan Transport Authority (MTA).
It was launched by the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) in 2000.
