Software giant Microsoft has been turning its attention towards generic domain names of late, one website has pointed out.
An article featured on Domain Name Wire has highlighted that Microsoft has favoured generic names in order to advertise its various programmes and offers.
For example, the firm bought generic domain name SearchPerks.com from its Californian owner in order to promote a new scheme.
SearchPerks allows those with Microsoft programmes installed on their computers to register to receive points depending on how many searches they conduct daily using the firm's engine.
The points can then be redeemed for prizes or donated to charity in April 2009.
Microsoft has also bought Cashback.com, the website said, though this hasn't been used for a similarly named scheme run by the company as yet.
Last week it was announced that the firm operating from generic site Local.com has had its name and logo patented for use within the US.
