American cinema-ticket vendor Fandango has bought the generic domain name Movies.com from Walt Disney.
The online ticket shop, owned by cable operator Comcast, purchased Movies.com on Monday for an undisclosed sum.
Movies.com, former ticketing partner of MovieTickets.com, attracted 1.9 million visitors in May, according to Nielsen Online in comparison 6.3 million people visited Fandango.com. The sale is expected to increase direct navigation to the site.
Fandango.com sells tickets for 1,300 cinemas across the USA which amounts to over 15,000 screens, according to its website.
The ticket vendor also said it handled 16 per cent of opening ticket sales for Sex and the City, indicating the online ticket industry's role in supplying advance tickets for major releases.
In response to JupiterResearch's comments about the small overall size of the online ticket business, Comcast consider it "a good thing", according to the Los Angeles Times.
Amy Banse, president of digital division Comcast Interactive Media added: "We think there's a lot of room to grow."
Celebrity interviews, photos and fan reviews are also on offer on Fandango.com.
