A new range of names could be added to internet address system allowing companies to choose unusual endings to the website addresses.
The board of the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (Icann) approved recommendations to put the names online meaning websites could choose different endings to the traditional .com, .org or .co.uk.
Dr Paul Tworney, president and chief executive officer of Icann, said the move could lead to a wider range of domain name choice and opportunity.
The final versions of the plans are expected to be published early next year and they must be approved by the board before the new process can be launched.
Dr Tworney said it was a new way for people to express themselves and it also represents a "massive increase" in the amount of 'real estate' on the net.
The decision came from the 32nd International Public Meeting of Icann which was held in Paris last week.
Peter Dengate Thrush, chairman of the board, said: "This was an extremely successful meeting that will be remembered as a milestone in the development of the internet."
However, Ian Andrew, CEO of DOTCOM Agency said: "The move to add yet more extensions will create confusion and potentially chaos. I believe this will strengthen the importance of .com domain names and popular country codes like .co.uk - the rest will just end up as noise."
