According to Verisign's latest domain name industry brief, there is currently a record high number of domain names registered on the internet.
The number of domain names in existence currently stands at 177 million, it revealed.
In 2008, it reveals, an extra 24 million domain names were added to the virtual world, representing a growth of 16 per cent compared to 2007's figures.
In the fourth quarter alone, 10.1 million names were registered online, the statistics show, with the base or .com and .net names growing to 90.4 million.
Jill McNabb, vice president of naming services at VeriSign, commented: "VeriSign is committed to working with ICANN and others to achieve a safe, consistent and ubiquitous user experience, while protecting company brands and their customers around the world."
A host of generic domain names, which are often considered to be valuable pieces of internet real estate, are still available for purchase. Examples of such valuable domain names still there for the taking include Ads.com and BusinessCertificates.com.
