Numeric domain names are increasing in popularity, as more innovative plans are announced to develop sites from such addresses, it has been reported.
An article published by the Wall Street Journal has pointed out that industry insiders have urged web users that numeric sites are here to stay.
It also highlights the high prices fetched for numeric domain names of late, as well as the plans of an Australian firm to transform 100.com into a search engine presenting the user with the 100 most relevant results.
The popularity of numeric domain names could also be attributable to the "scarcity of word-based domains" as .com still remains the most desirable suffix in the domain name realm.
Another benefit of numbers online is that they require no translation and are therefore universal, the article adds.
Professor of marketing at Wharton Eric Bradlow is quoted by the publication as saying: "I do think you will see a movement toward numerically named Web sites. They have this perception of technology and newness."
Last month, domain name registrar Sedo revealed that it had auctioned 77.com for the impressive sum of $350,000 (£235.688) - the highest numeric sale of the year so far for the organisation.
