Online theft does not just apply to credit cards and identity, but also extends to registered domain names, according to a report.
One of the recent victims of this crime was internet provider Comcast, whose address was hijacked temporarily three months ago, the culprits leaving electronic graffiti messages across the page, the Rocky Mountain News documented.
Ron Jackson, editor of DNJournal.com, said this kind of occurrence is unfortunately not uncommon and domain theft is a "real threat" to individuals and businesses.
"Hackers can sometimes break into a registrar account and change the (administrative) email address to their own so they can then approve the transfer of the victim's domain," Mr Jackson said.
However, it's also important for a company or individual to keep their domain name maintained by ensuring their registration is up to date, the site pointed out.
Earlier this month, security researcher Dan Kaminsky detailled numerous possible ways for hackers to expose flaws in the current domain name system.
