A number of generic domain names are earning "millions of dollars each year" for their owners in Australia, it has been suggested.
According to an article this week for MySmallBusiness, a section of the Sydney Morning Herald's website, premium internet real estate is earning large sums of cash for entrepreneurial domainers.
The website goes on to state that by engaging in domain name investment some savvy buyers are registering generic web addresses such as BedroomFurniture.com and then parking the sites to maximise the amount of revenue they can generate.
"Domainers can cram the websites with advertisements, then leave them idle and sit back as they earn a few cents per click - big bucks when you have a portfolio of thousands," the article states.
It goes on to highlight the sale of BedroomFurniture.com, which was sold for an estimated figure of AUS $280,000 having been purchased for AUS $40,000 several years earlier.
