If you have made the decision to buy a generic domain name, the next obstacle is to decide what name to choose and this is a critically important decision, according to a new report,
Most people use a search engine by typing in two words so think again if you were planning to just have a single, short word as your generic domain name. Try a two-word name to ensure you get people on your website who have been searching specifically for the sorts of products you offer.
For example, Poker.com is a good example of a successful one-word name because it has a large, multi-million pound industry behind it. However, for the most part, people will search for things like BritishPoker.com or CheapPoker.com.
"Smart buyers know that they need to acquire domain names that they can easily develop into profitable businesses," said Paul Wilson from domain name consultancy e21.com.
"Selecting the right domain names is making the right decision about a good quality generic domain name that has a billion dollar industry behind it and can be successfully operated on the internet."
He added that the name must describe what you do and describe it in generic words that people commonly use.
