8th April 2008 Pizza.com 'the latest in a line of high value sales'
Domain name news brought to you by DescriptiveDomainNames.com
The sale of Pizza.com is just the latest in a series of generic domain names that have been sold for such a high amount, it has been suggested.
According to Finfacts Ireland, the week-long auction that ended with the sale of the valuable internet real estate for $2.6 million is representative of a growing trend in which large sums of money are being exchanged.
The website points to other deals which have seen premium domain names attain serious profit and notes the trade of Business.com as a prime example.
It is reported that Business.com was bought in 1999 for $7.5 million and then sold to business directory service RH Donnelly for $350 million. This auction also managed to attract major players such as the New York Times and Dow Jones.
Previously, Chris Clark - Pizza.com's previous owner - told the Baltimore Sun he had only thought to trade the domain name after hearing Vodka.com had sold for $3 million.
"If someone's willing to pay that much for Vodka.com, maybe there's more interest in pizza.com," he told the newspaper was his reaction to the news.
