Entrepreneurs looking to build a domain name portfolio could find they are earning high returns for little investment, one expert has suggested.
In an article for the Sydney Morning Herald, as part of its MySmallBusiness section, it is noted that a number of Australian internet entrepreneurs are earning "millions of dollars" and registering sites for "as little as AUS $7.60".
Speaking to the newspaper, chief strategy officer of Dark Blue Sea Dan Warner said that his own company currently has a domain name portfolio estimated to be worth around AUS $500 million.
He adds that valuable internet real estate such as Manufacture.com, Doctorate.com and BedroomFurniture.com has all performed well for the group and states that many people may not realise the relatively low cost of investment.
"Domain names can be great assets as they cost very little to hold, and if you do nothing more than buy them and stick them in a drawer for a few years they can sell for large returns," he said.
In June, the Australian Domain Name Administrator will remove a ban stopping the sale of .au domains, the newspaper also reports.
