A commerce expert has spoken of the importance of registering a domain name for a new firm quickly - or risk it being snapped up by someone else.
Writing for the LA Times, business journalist Karen Klein has said that once you have chosen a name for your business it is vital to register immediately, as rival firms or those who hear of it may take advantage and buy it before you.
Giving advice to US bosses, Ms Klein said: "It's very important to register your business name as an Internet domain name before someone else researches your DBA filing and purchases your domain name for speculation."
A DBA or 'Doing Your Business As' is the trade name which a firm is given in the US before it can start running.
Generic domain names are often recommended over others as they are more memorable and are more likely to be typed directly into an address bar.
Successful businesses which hold a generic domain name include apple.com, think.com and dictionary.com.
