17th October 2008 Register.com: What to do if you can't find a domain name
Domain name news brought to you by DescriptiveDomainNames.com
Firms without fixed web addresses looking to carve out an online presence but who cannot find a suitable domain name have been offered guidance by a professional.
Doug Shuman, Register.com's senior vice president of customer marketing, has written an article for businesses hunting for a domain name and says the "obvious choice" is a dotcom name which is "short, easy to spell and easy to remember".
However, as "that is not as easy as it sounds," says the expert, companies could try getting specific about their names, by adding "geography or other business descriptions".
"By adding geography to your website, your domain will help you to be associated with local searches", he adds. This will also help a business to trap more traffic when they conduct area searches on engines.
Another alternative is to "consider a pre-registered domain name", Mr Shuman furthers and though these may be more expensive, "it may be worth the investment".
In USA today this week, entrepreneur Gladys Edmunds highlighted that a well-named website can pay dividends for companies in the long-term.
