A new report into the UK domain name sector has stated that organisations now acknowledge the benefits of using a generic domain name to achieve hits from targeted customers.
The research from Nominet, reported on Sedo.com, found that 65 per cent of all domain names registered in the last five years have been of the generic top level type.
It suggested this is more evidence to suggest that those outside the industry are increasingly aware of how valuable an internet presence can be.
Sedo's director of operations in the UK, Nora Nanayakkara, said: "It is vital for UK businesses to ensure they have the best possible online address."
The report also listed the year's top five .co.uk published sales, which was led by Recycle.co.uk (£150,000), Ink.co.uk (£130,425), Phones.co.uk (£120,000), Fly.co.uk (£87,500) and Connected.co.uk (£80,000).
Meanwhile, the Times recently covered the case of Jake Winebaum, who bought Business.com for $7.5 million in 1999.
He then built the site into a successful business-to-business portal and went on to sell the network for $345 million.
