Businesses have been advised to secure the rights to their company's domain names as soon as they can.
Buying up their related domain names is imperative for a firm as it "clearly identifies who they are", according to an article featured on searchchicago.sumtimes.com, which features the opinions of several industry insiders.
"This is their brand, the sign they hang on the door", explains Matt Hook, of corporate web site designing firm Mutual Vision.
He added that data protection is always a priority but "most reputable firms that are in the business of providing web sites have controls in place to keep data safe".
Jordan Shifrin from Kovitz Shifrin also offered counsel, saying that "web site domain names can be registered just like any other business or trade name".
He went on to add that even if a company does not yet have a site, it should consider registering several similar and related names anyway in the event of a change of plan and also to "ensure that its name is not misused".
According to Tim Schumacher, co-founder and chief executive officer of Sedo.com, domain names are "the real estate of the internet" and are "definitely here to stay".
