More small to medium-sized businesses are recognising the value of premium domain names and buying them up, it has been claimed.
According to Nora Nanayakkara, business development manager of UK-based domain name registrar Sedo, "sales have tripled as businesses see the value in having a presence online".
Referring to the recent $5.1 million sale of Toys.com to chain Toys 'r' Us, Ms Nanayakkara told the BBC that: "Toys.com is going to put them in the top search ranking and is likely to give them kudos in terms of brand recognition."
This is a sentiment shared by industry publication Domain Name Journal, which this week stated that the sale of generic domain name Toys.com shows "the inherent value in high quality domain names".
It added that they could be a safe investment bet in the recession, as they continue to "outperform almost every other class of assets in this kind of downturn."
Some examples of premium domain names which are still available for purchase include Camera.com and ClownDolls.com.
