31st October 2008 Top-level domain names 'set to get more expensive'

As the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) prepares to release its new programme guidebook, top-level domains are expected to become more expensive for firms hoping to buy up associated names, it has been claimed.
ICANN will make available global top level domains (GTLDs), or the suffixes at the end of a web address, to those proposing on which the organisation deems to be suitable.
The guidebook, set to be released this weekend, will outline the procedures needed to be taken and the criteria surrounding the application of one of these names, reported smartcompany.com.au.
IT chief technology officer for Melbourne Bruce Tonkin pointed out that businesses and brand owners are feeling anxious about the expense of buying "a lot of new domain spaces".
"There is some protection around geographic names. For example, those who want to use .paris would need to get a formal letter from the relevant government authority," he continued.
Applications will be accepted for domain name extension registrations in spring next year, it was announced in the middle of October.
