19th December 2007 Trio of generic names sell for six-figure sums

A number of generic domain names have exchanged hands this week for large sums of money, it has emerged.
Industry news website Domain Name Journal reported today that auction prices for a number of sites reached six figures this week, with some being purchased for as much as $200,000.
Perth.com was the $200,000 selling site with a number of other web addresses reaching high prices at auction.
Zimbabwe.com, another geographically-named domain, exchanged hands for $130,000 and Via.com was able to attain a price of $157,500, the website noted.
The sale of both Via.com and Zimbabwe.com was handled by Sedo and the Perth.com deal was brokered by Moniker/GeoDomain Expo.
A study conducted in 2005 by Domain Administration found that the most popular geographic domain name in Australia was Perth.com.au, which suggests the new owner of Perth.com could have purchased a very valuable web address.
