19th November 2007 Undervalued generic sites snapped up
Domain name news brought to you by DescriptiveDomainNames.com
Two generic domain names that have gone virtually unused for a number of years have been purchased and successfully relaunched, it has emerged.
Both Phone.com and Software.com have sold on for an estimated total value of around $7 million and are being profitably utilised by their new owners, according to internet news website TechCrunch.
It is thought that the sites' original owners, Openwave Systems, let the domains go to waste for a number of years before allowing two new enterprises to snap them up.
The website claims that Phone.com, which was secured by the Internet Real Estate Group, is now operating as a small business focused VoIP provider and, due to its generic title, has had to spend no money on advertising.
It is also predicted that both Phone.com and Software.com, which has been acquired by Washington VC, will also benefit from a significant level of type-in traffic while also making use of their suitability for search-engine optimisation.
Software.com hopes to take advantage of the thriving software download market which, it claims, accounted for around 20 per cent of software purchases in 2006, citing an NPD Group study.
