An expert has outlined reasons why a particular domain name may prove to be lucrative for a company.
According to Mary Krause, the founder and owner of website design and marketing firm Designers Cafe, has writes on azcentral.com that "there is a lot of confusion as to how important a web address can be for your web presence".
However, she warns, internet domain names can be just as important as a businesses' physical premises and memorable, simple names are best.
Generic domain names, such as Ads.com and BritishCompany.com, which are often considered to be prime pieces of internet real estate, fit into this category as they are concise and are often searched for organically by web users.
"You don't want to have too many words in your domain name as your customers may not remember it," Ms Krause states.
She also warns against using hyphens if possible, as they may be "difficult for customers to remember and could result in a misspelling that the search engines may not catch".
Registering several variations and directing them to a company's main site also helps to fend off competitors and direct more traffic to the main domain name, the expert concludes.
